Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (May 22, 2005) - The Swing of the Quad Cities (25-17) scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Burlington Bees (19-23) 8-6 at Community Field this afternoon. A crowd of 2,830 was on hand for the 6th annual Community Basket Day put on by the Chicken Lip Foundation. Today's crowd was the second largest in the event's history.

The Swing got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning thanks to RBI doubles by Mike Ferris and Brandon Yarbrough. The Bees came back with a run in the bottom of the second when Ed Lucas doubled and scored on a groundout by Eddie Solis. In the bottom of the third inning, Miguel Vega launched a solo homer, his first of the year, to start the inning and the Bees took a 3-2 lead when Mario Lisson's two-out ground rule double drove in Irving Falu.

Bees' starter Matt Campbell worked through five innings and allowed just the two runs and left the game eligible to pick up his first win of the year. Greg Atencio pitched two prefect innings in relief, but the Swing erupted against him in the top of the eighth. With one out, Juan Lucena singled and went to third on a double by pinch-hitter Wes Swackhamer. An intentional walk to Jarrett Hoffpauir loaded the bases and an unintentional walk to Derry Hammond forced in Lucena with the tying run. Joe Mather was 0-14 in the series, but untied the game with a bases clearing triple to right-center field that put the Swing ahead 6-3. Atencio turned the ball over to Adam Rowe who was greeted by a two-run homer by Ferris to finish the rally and put the Swing up 8-3.

The Bees rallied in the bottom of the eighth against left-hander Kevin Ool. With one out, Alan Moye singled and scored on a double by Lucas into the right field corner. Eddie Solis blasted a two-run homer over the billboard on the light standard that pulled the Bees to within two at 8-6. After a strikeout, Vega singled and the Swing turned to closer Mike Sillman for the third time in four nights. Sillman walked pinch-hitter Rusty Brown and Irving Falu to load the bases, but fanned Geraldo Valentin on after two foul balls on 3-2 to get out of the jam. Sillman set the Bees down in order in the bottom of the ninth for his 12th save. Ool picked up the win to go to 9-0. Atencio suffered the loss to fall to 1-2.

The Bees go on the road tomorrow night to start a four-game series at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend at 6:30. RH Billy Buckner (3-5, 4.35) will start for the Bees, looking for his third consecutive win. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
