
Whitecaps have rough weekend in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - For the first time this season, the Whitecaps were involved in a series sweep and it went against West Michigan. Cedar Rapids won all four games in a series that concluded with a 13-7 victory on Sunday.
The Kernels took six of the eight meetings in the season series.
Michael Collins dismantled the Whitecaps pitching staff with seven RBI as he barely missed two chances to hit for cycle. Collins singled in the second, hit a two-run double in the third, knocked a two-run homer in the fifth and was robbed of a potential triple by centerfielder Justin Justice in the sixth. Justice banged into the outfield fence one step after making a running catch.
In the eighth with the bases loaded and two out, Collins line a bases-clearing hit to right field, took a turn at second, but elected to be content with a double.
Steve Young picked up his first three RBI of the season for the Whitecaps in three consecutive at-bats. After a Justice triple to start the fifth, young drove in the run with a ground out. He then had an RBI double in the seventh and a run-scoring single in the eighth.
The Whitecaps pulled themselves back into the game in the seventh inning with four runs, which cut the lead to 10-5. Brent Dlugach reached on a bases loaded error, which allowed the fourth run to score, but then was picked off at first to end the inning and the rally.
West Michigan made it 10-6 in the eighth on Young's single, but the three-run hit by Collins in the bottom of the inning sealed the game for Cedar Rapids.
Dallas Trahern allowed eight runs (7 earned) in five innings as the starter for the Whitecaps.
Cedar Rapids scored in every offensive inning except the first against Trahern and the seventh against Collin Mahoney. Wilkin Ramirez launched his fourth home run of the year to right-center in the top of the ninth.
That's All Folks: Sunday's game was the final regular season meeting of 2005 between the Whitecaps and Kernels. It is the first season series completed by the Whitecaps this year.
Bottom Dwellers: For the second consecutive series, the Whitecaps will take on a last-place team as the Dayton Dragons visit Fifth Third ballpark for a four game series beginning Monday night.
