Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities handed the Kernels (19-22) their third consecutive loss with a 10-5 victory in front of a Buck-A-Cup Thursday crowd of 2,064 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The setback leaves the Kernels three games under the .500 mark and equals the club's worst record of the season. Cedar Rapids was 1-4 following an Opening Day loss to Peoria on April 10.
Starter Tommy Mendoza (1-5) had a rough evening in more ways than one. With his parents watching from the stands the Hialeah, FL, native surrendered seven runs on eight hits over just four innings of work in what turned out to be his shortest outing of the year. Mendoza was also struck by a line drive off the bat of A.J. Van Slyke in the fourth inning, though he would remain in the game and appeared uninjured.
The Swing jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the third before the Kernels cut the lead in half when a balk by Quad Cities starter Adam Daniels plated Travis Schlichting from third.
Quad Cities then struck for five runs in the next inning to knock the Kernels off stride.
Casey Rowlett and Daniel Nelson both had RBI singles off Mendoza before Jose Martinez dealt the Kernels a crushing blow by lofting a three-run homer off the Westdale Mall/Mix 96.5 Home Run Hot Tub sign in left field.
Stantrel Smith was 2-for-4 and helped the Kernels chip away at the Swing's lead with a triple in the fifth that would lead to a run.
The Swing plated a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth but the Kernels countered with three runs over the final two frames to make the final score semi-respectable.
Once again the Kernels plated a run on a balk, this time when Swing reliever Danny Borne committed an infraction. Dallas Morris accounted for the second run when he drove in Brad Coon with a sacrifice fly.
