Sweets split with Kitsap on Tuesday

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arturo Reyes tossed a complete game and struck out seven to lead Walla Walla to a 2-1 victory in game one and Kitsap rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take game two, 3-2, and earn a split of Tuesday's West Coast League doubleheader at Borleske Stadium.

Reyes scatterd five hits and didn't walk a batter to pick up his first win of the summer for the Sweets (2-3). He allowed a run on four hits over the first two innings before settling down. He set down 13-straight from the third through the seventh inning before Daniel Jewett led off the seventh with an infield single. Reyes closed the door on the Kitsap rally with a strikeout that left Jewett standing on third.

Shortstop Jared Jordan provided all the offense the Sweets would need, driving in both runs with a pair of sac flies. With Kitsap leading, 1-0, n the bottom of the third, Walla Walla loaded the bases with no outs. Jarrod Turner started the inning by beating out a ground ball to short and Kalani Brackenridge followed with a ground ball to third that didn't result in an out as the throw to second was dropped. Alex Bonczyk then attempted to bunt both runners over but got much more as his bunt landed out of the reach of a diving Jared Gaynor for an infield single. Jordan followed with a deep fly ball to left that score Turner to tie the game.

The same four players would produce the second Sweets' run in nearly identical fashion in the fifth. Turner led off with a single, Brackenridge walked and Bonczyk loaded the bases with a bunt single down the third base line. Jordan again lofted a fly ball to left to score Turner and give the Sweets the lead, 2-1.

Reyes did the rest. He a pair of groundouts around a strikeout in the third, induced two more groundouts in the fourth and struck out two in the fifth. Reyes retired the side in order in the sixth before allowing his first baserunner since the second in the seventh.

Kitsap scored its only run in the second inning on an RBI single from Ryan Albert. Jewett led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, to third on a single and scored on Albert's base knock. The BlueJackets eventually loaded the bases with one out but Reyes got Brandon Alvarez to hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Marc Garza, Turner and Bonczyk all had two hits, accounting for all of the Sweets' safeties in the game.

Game Two

Garza's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth put the Sweets up 2-1, but Kitsap tied the game in the top of the sixth and scored the game-winning run on an infield single in the top of the ninth to earn a split.

Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Dallas Hessler ripped a leadoff double inside the bag at third to start the BlueJackets. The double chased Sweets starter Zach Brandon and Francisco Tellez greeted reliever Joe Arlt with a double to right to tie the game.

The two teams remained deadlocked until the ninth. Jewett started the rally with a leadoff single to left field and then moved to second on a sac bunt. Frankie Torres then grounded out to third but Jewett made a heads-up baserunning decision and took third as the throw went across the diamond. It proved costly for the Sweets as Curtis Wildung beat out an infield single to score Jewett with the winning run.

A Kitsap error in the fourth opened the door for the Sweets to take the lead. Ben Ruff reached as his grounder to deep short was thrown away at first base and Garza followed with his first home run of the season to left field. The long ball was just the second Sweets hit of the game.

The Sweets had a chance to win the game in the both the sixth and seventh innings. Ruff ripped a two-out double off the wall in left in the sixth but was stranded and the Sweets loaded the bases in the seventh and could not push across a run. Kitsap reliever Colin Feldtman came on with two outs in the seventh and induced a comebacker to end the threat and ended up picking up the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Kitsap's comeback ruined a strong start from Zach Brandon. The right-hander struck out six in five-plus innings of work in his first start of the season. He allowed two runs on five hits and made a spectacular defensive play in the fourth to turn a double play. With a runner on first and no outs, Torres hit a comebacker that Brandon knocked down perfectly with his foot. Brandon then picked it up and fired to second to begin a 1-6-3 double play.

Garrett Tygerson was strong in relief for the Sweets and suffered the tough loss. He entered with two outs in the sixth and got the Sweets out of the jam and then registered two scoreless innings before Kitsap rallied in the ninth.

The Sweets and the BlueJackets conclude their three-game series on Wednesday night. DJ Smith is scheduled to get the ball for the Sweets. It is 80's Night at the ballpark presented by Basel Cellars. Wednesday is also the first 6-for-36 night of the season. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
