Longview: June 6, 2012: Led by home runs from Nick Paxton (Mt. Hood CC) and Tyler Madrid (Santa Ana), the Black Bears defeated the Kelowna Falcons 4-2 for their first league victory to move to 1-3 overall in league play.
Alec Cordova (Cal State Fullerton) was terrific on the mound for Cowlitz. He allowed only one run on four hits and a walk in six innings, striking out six. The Falcons got their lone run off him in the first inning but the Black Bears came back with Paxton's home run and a Connor Armijo (Santa Ana) sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead. Austin Wobrock (Orange Coast) added an RBI single and Tyler Madrid (Santa Ana) sent a towering blast over the left-centerfield wall for the team's final run.
Matt Pechmann (Mt. Hood CC) was solid in relief, allowing one run in two and two thirds innings before Kody Watts (U of Portland) was summoned to record the final out. Watts has still not given up a run this season.
After going 1-10 in the Black Bears first three league games, Paxton went 3-4 with the home run and two singles. Wobrock had multiple hits as well, going 2-5.
The Black Bears next game is Thursday at David Story Field, where it will be Estetica Day Spa Thirsty Thursday & Ladies Night.
