Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash. "" With the first homestand coming to a close, the Sweets are still putting the finishing touches on their 2012 summer roster as three players were signed to full contracts, General Manager Zachary Fraser announced on Thursday.

Thanks to their strong play over the first six games of the season, two players have turned 10-day contracts into a full summer employment with the Sweets, while the third was signed late last week. Walla Walla Community College sophomore left-hander Joe Arlt and WWCC freshman catcher Jarrod Turner both had their contracts extended to a full season, and Columbia Basin College right-hander Arturo Reyes has been signed to a full contract.

"Joe and Jarrod have worked hard, made positive contributions early on in the season and have earned this opportunity," Fraser said. "We are excited to see them contribute to our efforts to win a pennant."

Fraser continued on to laud the ability of the right-hander Reyes.

"Arturo is one of the best young arms in the Pacific Northwest, as witnessed by his complete-game win on Tuesday night (game 1 of the Sweets doubleheader with Kitsap)," Fraser said. "We look forward to his contributions on the mound and to him being a leader in the clubhouse."

In two appearances this summer, Arlt has thrown 3 2/3 innings. He got the start against Corvallis last Saturday and lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Arlt made his second appearance of the summer out of the bullpen on Tuesday night against Kitsap, retiring two of the three batters he faced.

Turner has been one of the Sweets' best players over the first six games, leading the team with a .389 average. He has seven hits, leads the team with four runs scored and also walked three times and been hit by a pitch.

After his Tuesday night debut, fans will be happy to see Reyes stick around for the summer. The right-hander tossed a complete game and struck out seven to earn the win against Kitsap. He didn't walk a batter and allowed just five hits. At one point, he retired 13-straight and finished the game by setting down 16 of the final 17 batters he faced.

Following Thursday's game against the Northwest Honkers, the Sweets will have two days off before heading to Bend, OR., for their first road trip of the season. They'll play three with the Elks and then travel to Corvallis to face the Knights for three games. The Sweets return to Borleske Stadium on Saturday, June 16 to face the Portland Lobos in a two-game series.
