Sweets Ride Early Offense In 10-4 Win

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Valley Pippins saw their five-series winning streak snapped Tuesday night, as the Walla Walla Sweets won 10-4 in front 1,360 fans at County Stadium.

Repeating their performance from Monday night, the Sweets (8-12) scored twice in the first inning, using RBI singles from Mike Paulson and Jordan Frabasilio to take a 2-0 lead against Pippins starter Brandon Williams.

After Williams shut the Sweets down in the 2 nd inning, he found himself in trouble again in the 3 rd, letting the first six men reach with four of them scoring before exiting the ballgame down 6-0. Reliever Nick Suniga gave up an RBI single to Sean Bouchard after Williams' departure to score the fifth and final run of the inning and extend the Sweets lead to 7-0.

The Pippins (12-8) surrendered another run in the top of the 4 th to make it 8-0, before Suniga settled in over the final few innings of his outing.

After giving up a run in the top of the 7 th, the Pippins finally got to Sweets starter Cody Carrolll, who had a no-hitter going into the 5 th inning. After a single and a walk put two runners aboard, and a balk pushed them to 2 nd and 3 rd base, Ryan Yamane drove in the first run on an RBI groundout. Alex Guenette, who went 3-4 in Tuesday's contest, lined an RBI single down the right field line, before a wild pitch would plate another run. Ryan Rosa came up with runners on 2 nd and 3 rd with two outs, but was unable to further cut into the 9-3 deficit.

Reliever Jay Flaa worked the final 2 1/3 innings for the Sweets, who won ended a four-series losing streak and won just their second series of the season.

The Pippins look to avoid a sweep for the first time this year, as they face off with the Sweets for the final time at County Stadium Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Pippins will present a free post-game fireworks show as part of the series finale, before the two teams head to Walla Walla Thursday to begin another three-game series.
