Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
BESTED BY THE BETTS: A ninth-inning lead evaporated as the RailRiders fell from ahead in their homestand opener against Pawtucket, 3-2. The turning point came with the bases loaded, two outs and rising phenom Mookie Betts at the plate. The 21-year-old waged a 10-pitch battle of a plate appearance against three-time National League All-Star Heath Bell (2-1). Alas, that 10th pitch went up the middle for a two-run single that made for the game's final score.
RALLY 'RIDERS: The RailRiders mounted their own comeback attempt by loading the bases with two outs in the home ninth against Drake Britton (1-2). However, Tommy Layne entered from the bullpen and whiffed the pinch-hitting Carmen Angelini to wrap things up. Layne locked down his fourth save.
UNDER THE SEA: Dave Miley's team fell to a season-worst five games below .500 and a season-worst 9.5 games out of first place.
FALLING FROM AHEAD: The RailRiders have owned a lead in 16 (41%) of their 39 losses this season. They fell to 25-3 when leading after eight innings and 25-5 when pacing their foe after seven. No IL team has lost more when leading after eight innings and only one has more setbacks (6) when leading after seven (Pawtucket). The PawSox won for just the second time in 31 games when trailing after eight frames.
STOP, THIEVES!: Travis Shaw stole second base in the fourth inning. The RailRiders have allowed their opponents to successfully swipe a bag in each of their last 14 attempts. The RailRiders have nabbed just 21 of 99 (.212) would-be base stealers. No IL team has had more stolen base attempts or successes against it than SWB. Only Louisville (.205) has a worse caught-stealing efficiency.
TOUGH TIMES: Since its May 28 win at Louisville, the team has gone 7-15 (.318). Eight of those losses have come by one run or in extra innings.
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: Last mark marked the start of the second-half schedule for the RailRiders. Including last night's game No. 73, two-thirds of SWB's last half of the 144-game regular season pits it against its Northern brothers. The RailRiders are 15-18 in IL North play.
CLOSE CALLS: SWB has lost seven of its last eight one-run games.
FA SO DE LA: Starter Joel De La Cruz left the game after three-plus innings when Travis Shaw started the fourth with a comebacker that hit the right-hander. After lasting at least five frames in each of his first five starts, he has not done so once in his last five outings.
WELCOME BACK: In his first IL game since April 13, John Ryan Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double. In between, he saw time in 24 games as the big club's back-up to Brian McCann. Murphy hit .286/.308/.365/.673 in the bigs and committed just one error.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders did not allow a home run, snapping a string of 11 straight games with a home run against them...Austin Romine became the third different RailRider to serve as a pinch hitter...In the ninth, he batted for Corban Joseph in a right-left switch and walked against Britton to load the bases and chase the lefty...Angelini then became the fourth different pinch hitter in a right-left switch for Taylor Dugas...In his Triple-A debut, Dugas started in center field and went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout...Earlier today, the New York Yankees sent De La Cruz to Double-A and called up today's starter, Bryan Mitchell...Betts entered today second in MiLB with 98 hits...Only Jose Peraza who was recently promoted to Double-A Mississippi (Atlanta Braves), has more at 101.
