New York Dragons News Release
(July 15, 2008) - New York Dragons WR Kevin Swayne was named to the AFL's Al Lucas Hero Team today for his contributions in the community both on Long Island and beyond.
Swayne is active in the Long Island community in many aspects. He sponsored a Long Island flag football team in Uniondale, NY, and in 2007, Swayne coordinated a Thanksgiving Dinner drive for the Hempstead Low-Income Housing Area, which provided Thanksgiving dinners to over 500 families.
This season, Swayne has also served as keynote speaker for the Long Island Youth for Christ Events. In June, he organized a charity golf event for MANNA Worldwide, a ministry that builds feeding centers worldwide. He's also part of a church group that gives a Christmas Party each year for girls at Momma's House in Jericho, NY. An ordained minister, Swayne is highly involved with every aspect of his church.
In the offseason, Swayne spent time visiting area elementary and middle schools, speaking to students about the importance of education, teamwork and sportsmanship both on the field and in the classroom.
Swayne and 10 other players were named to the team and are now nominees for the AFL's 2008 Al Lucas Hero Award, which will be announced this Thursday (July 17). The Al Lucas Hero Award is presented annually to the player who makes the most significant contribution to both his community and the game of Arena Football. The award was created in honor of the late Los Angeles Avengers lineman Al Lucas, who believed in both giving back to his community and growing the AFL.
