Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA (Tuesday, July 15) - The Philadelphia Soul activated defensive back Brian Mance off Injured Reserve on Tuesday.
The move means that Mance will be available to play in Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII against the San Jose SaberCats on Sunday, July 27 at 3 p.m. (et).
Mance had started eight games this for the Soul before fracturing his ankle in a Week 9 57-28 win against the Dallas Desperados. He also missed the Soul's Week 8 76-55 win at the Columbus Destroyers on the bereavement list. The Soul placed Mance on the Injured Reserve list on May 1st.
Mance was a key factor in Philadelphia's 58-57 win, Week 7 at San Jose. He ended the game with a Soul-high seven tackles, including six solo tackles. The Soul defense as a whole stepped up strongly after Philadelphia fell down 33-7 to the SaberCats in the first half. San Jose ended the game scoring only three touchdowns on their last seven possessions as the Soul rallied to win the only other meeting between the two teams this season.
In his second season in the AFL, Mance set a new career-high for tackles this season with 49.5. Despite missing the eight games, only Eddie Moten (93.5) ended the season with more tackles for the Soul than Mance. A Clemson graduate, Mance played in the af2 for the Manchester Wolves in 2006 before joining the Soul. While in Manchester, Mance registered 67.5 tackles, four interceptions and 10 pass break-ups.
The Soul are celebrating their fifth anniversary this season. Following last season, the Soul were recognized with the Commissioner's Award as the Organization of the Year and were an honorable mention for the PRISM Award in the category of fan appreciation. The Soul drew a total of 131,817 fans this season, their largest number since their inaugural season of 2004. The Soul sold out four games in the 2008 season and averaged a crowd of 16,477 fans per game. Since their inception, the Soul have drawn a total of 646,043 fans, the most in the AFL over that time frame. Tickets for the Virgin Mobile Arena Bowl XXII are on sale.
