Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GREENSBORO - The Greensboro Swarm (15-29) escaped with a 110-106 win in overtime at home Saturday night against the Grand Rapids Drive (23-21). They led 58-38 at halftime and once by as many as 21 points, but the Drive were able to rally in the second half. Mangok Mathiang blocked Kay Felder's potential game-winning layup in the final seconds of regulation, and the Swarm outscored the Drive 9-5 in overtime to seal the victory.
Felder's free throws with just under 20 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Drive a three-point lead, but the Swarm were able to tie it on their next possession as Marcus Paige drew a three-shot foul and made all three, leading to Mathiang's overtime-forcing block. The Swarm then scored the first five points of overtime and held the Drive scoreless for over a minute and a half of the extra time.
Cat Barber scored a game-high 32 points with five assists for the Swarm, Damien Wilkins had 25 points including a three-pointer to open overtime, and Mathiang had 12 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. 11 Greensboro players scored on the night.
For the Drive, Felder led the way with 28 points, five rebounds and 11 assists. Jamel Morris added 23 points, Landry Nnoko had 12 points and 17 rebounds and KJ McDaniels scored 15 points and registered three steals.
The Swarm held the Drive to just 19 points in each of the first two quarters, but then the Drive held them to just 16 in the third quarter, cutting the deficit down to four points. The Drive made 13-of-39 three-pointers (39 percent) and missed just one of their 17 free throw attempts, but the Swarm equalized this with more efficient inside scoring and drawing more free throw attempts. Wilkins especially starred at the line for Greensboro, making all 11 of his attempts.
After three straight road games, the Drive are slated to host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Tuesday for their next game. The Swarm will be in Mississauga to play Raptors 905 the same day.
