(GREENSBORO, NC) - The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, fell to the Cleveland Charge (Cleveland Cavaliers affiliate) 102-112 on Wednesday evening at the Novant Health Fieldhouse. The Swarm move to 2-7 in the regular season while the Charge improved to 7-1.
In a tightly contested first half, the Swarm entered halftime with a narrow four-point lead over the Charge. Neither team surmounted a lead greater than seven points in the opening periods, which was held by Greensboro in the second quarter. Cleveland's Sam Merril led all scorers at the break with 17 points. Merril finished the night with 30 points, while Sharife Cooper was the game's top scorer with 33 points.
Following halftime, the Charge surged ahead in the contest and gained possession of the lead early in the third period. At one point in the quarter, Cleveland stretched its lead over Greensboro by 15 points, the largest lead either team would hold in the contest. Despite Greensboro's best efforts, including closing the lead to within six in the closing minutes, Cleveland never relinquished its lead.
Kobi Simmons led the way offensively for the Swarm with 24 points off the bench on an impressive 8-of-10 shooting from the field in 32 minutes. James Bouknight, on assignment from the Hornets, contributed 18 points in 24 minutes. In seven games with Greensboro, Bouknight has recorded four games with 15-plus points and is averaging 17 points per game. The Swarm had three additional double-digit point performances from Theo Maledon (14), Jaylen Sims (12) and Kai Jones (10).
In addition to Cooper and Merril's combined 63 points, Cleveland was boosted by Jamorko Pickett's double-double, which saw him earn 20 points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes.
Greensboro will be back in action on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in a home contest against the Windy City Bulls (Chicago Bulls affiliate) at the Novant Health Fieldhouse.
