SwampDogs Fall in Tight Contest
July 3, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The SwampDogs dropped a hard-fought pitcher's duel to the Wilmington Sharks 2-1 Wednesday night at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington.
The game was scoreless in the early going, when both starting pitchers - Nick Hartman (LSU Eunice) for the SwampDogs, and John Parke (South Carolina) for the Sharks - traded zeroes for the first four innings.
The SwampDogs finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning with a run after Jason Blum (Southeast Missouri State) was walked to lead off the inning, then three batters later, David Palenzuela (Miami Dade) singled him home to but the Dogs up 1-0.
Trouble would find Hartman in the seventh inning, when he allowed hits to Michael Montville (Maryland) and Cam McRae (Presbyterian) to lead off the frame, then struck out the next two batters. He then issued a free pass to Jake Kusz (UNC Greensboro) to load the bases and was taken out of the game.
Seth Laigast (New Orleans) came in and walked Matt Brandy (Oral Roberts) and Sam Foy (UNC Wilmington) to bring home two runs, and the Sharks led 2-1.
The Sharks bullpen was able to hold the SwampDogs off the scoreboard in the final innings of the game, and Kyler Stout (Oral Roberts) came on to get the save and seal the comeback win for the Sharks.
Hartman would take the hard-luck loss for the SwampDogs, and Ryan Manore would get the win for the Sharks.
The SwampDogs return home Thursday July 3rd to host the Wilson Tobs on fireworks night at The Swamp. Tickets are going fast, so get yours now by calling 426-5900.
