Swamp Rabbits Announce Heroes Night Honorees and Unveil Specialty Jersey

January 13, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, are thrilled to announce the local heroes who will be honored during the Heroes Night game on January 22, as well as unveil their specialty jerseys for the evening.

In addition, the Swamp Rabbits are pleased to announce the donation of more than 500 tickets to Upstate fire, law enforcement, EMS and military personnel thanks to the generosity of local companies.

"Everyday members of our community risk their own lives and safety in order to serve and protect others," General Manager Chris Lewis said. "Words do not express the deep gratitude we have for the men and women who keep our country and community safe, and we hope that honoring all of them can serve as a symbol of our thanks. We feel it is our duty to recognize these tremendous men and women and encourage the entire community to come out to this game and join us in saying thank you."

Heroes Night is aimed at honoring the brave men and women who serve and have served our community and country as first responders and soldiers. The Swamp Rabbits will do so by wearing specialty uniforms during their game on January 22 against Evansville. The special edition jerseys will be auctioned immediately following the contest at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit Upstate Warrior Solution, the Greenville Fire Association Scholarship Fund and the Marcus Whitfield Youth Camp.

Throughout the game, the Swamp Rabbits will also recognize several local heroes who put their duty and service to others and our country above themselves. Those being honored include:

- Greenville County Sheriff's Deputy, Dave Dempsey, was shot and seriously injured on December 10 while answering a call at a Taylors apartment complex. Deputy Dempsey remains in the hospital while continuing his recovery and is in stable condition.

- John Warren is a former, decorated infantry officer in the Marine Corps and the founder and President of Lima One Capital. John served four years on active duty and led over 300 combat missions in Iraq before leaving the Marine Corps as a captain in 2008. During his 2006 deployment, John was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for valor in combat and "heroic achievement."

- Firefighters with the Gantt Fire Department battled a blaze at a Greenville County home on February 9, 2015 and pulled an unresponsive man from the burning structure. The members of the Gantt Fire Department saved the man from the fire and revived him so that he could receive further care. He has recovered from his injuries and the ordeal thanks to their heroic actions.

Heroes Night will begin with a "Touch-A-Truck" event from 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. just outside the main entrance of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, at the corner of North and Academy Streets. Several police, fire, EMS and military vehicles, including SWAT vans, hummers and a fire department smokehouse, will be parked and available for fans to interact with prior to the game.

In addition, the national anthem will be sung by local professional artist Joe Everson, who will complete a live-action painting with a surprise patriotic twist while singing the Star Spangled Banner. The painting will be auctioned off with that night's specialty jerseys immediately following the contest.

As a part of the evening, over 500 complimentary tickets are being made available for first responders, military personnel and their families courtesy of a number of Swamp Rabbits partners. The following is a list of companies that have generously contributed to the donation of tickets.
