Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The Susan G. Komen organization, known worldwide for their efforts in raising funds to find a cure for breast cancer, will be attending the Memphis RiverKings' game Saturday January 20 as they face off against the Odessa Jackalopes, at 2 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation's mission is to eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. For more than 20 years, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has led the nation's charge in the fight against breast cancer. Founded in 1982 to honor a promise made to Susan Goodman Komen, Nancy Goodman's older sister, who passed on at 36 years old of breast cancer.
Today Nancy is joined by scores of women and men, families, researchers, corporate and community partners, volunteers and donors, who share her vow to do everything they can to fund a cure for cancer.
The MidSouth Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation raises funds to support a variety of programs in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton and DeSoto counties. In 2006, the Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate contributed over $390,000 to provide services including free mammograms, clinical breast exams and breast self-exam instruction to women in the community.
More than two million breast cancer survivors alive in the United States today, because breast cancer is being found earlier due to increased awareness and greater use of screening tests and well as better treatment options. This means a better chance of surviving and a better quality of life than ever before.
The Susan G. Komen organization has participated with the Memphis RiverKings featured non-profit and fundraising program for two years. "We feel this is a great opportunity to partner with the RiverKings", said Nicole Hernandez, Fundraising Chair for the Mid-South Susan G. Komen affiliate located in Memphis. "We are looking forward to utilizing this partnership to educate the people throughout DeSoto County."
As a feature of the RiverKings featured non-profit of the night, a representative of the Susan G. Komen organization will drop the ceremonial puck prior to Saturday's game.
RiverKings stand out players Derek Landmesser, Louis Dumont, Travis Banga, and Larry Sterling will be using pink Susan G. Komen commemorative sticks that will be auctioned off following the game.
"The pink stick idea was presented to us and we feel it is a great way to combine the color pink, which to so many people represents breast cancer, to raise awareness," said Hernandez. "We are thankful to the players using the pink commemorative sticks, and are excited to auction off several of the used sticks following the game."
"We will also be selling pucks at our table," said Hernandez. The Susan G. Komen table will be located behind section 117 Saturday and representatives will have RiverKing logo pucks with the pink Susan G. Komen logo on the opposite side. Several of these pucks will be autographed. "Autographed pucks will be sold for $12," said Hernandez. "The non autographed pucks will be sold for $7. All proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen organization."
