Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

The Ice Flyers led through two periods, but the Surge came back to win 3-2 on Friday evening in Pensacola. Pensacola scored a goal in each of the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead, but the Surge notched three unanswered points to take the lead and the game. Matt Whitehead had two assists while Monte and Galan scored the Pensacola goals.

Pensacola had a good chance to score early with a penalty shot by Erik Stoyanovich, but the shot would miss and the Ice Flyers had to wait seven minutes to score the first goal of the game. Matt Whitehead made a nifty pass to Anthony Monte at the top of the slot. Monte skated in and slipped the puck past Zaniboni in goal to give the Ice Flyers a 1-0 lead at 7:08. Chris Rebernik also earned an assist on the play. The score would stand into the first intermission.

Pensacola added to their score in the second. Kevin Galan fired a shot from the top of the slot to the left of Zaniboni and into the net. The drive at 9:52 came with assists by Matt Withers and Matt Whitehead.

The Ice Flyers were a man down towards the end of the second period, allowing Velemirovich to find the puck in front of the crease at 17:56. With a quick backhand flick he buried the puck and the Surge pulled within one.

The third period did not go Pensacola?s way. Birthday boy Matt Zultek ultimately earned the game winner after Andrew Boudreau tied it up just 1:33 into the final frame. Then Zultek gave the Surge the win with a strike at 14:05.

With Knoxville winning 7-5 tonight, the Ice Flyers fall to fifth place in the SPHL standings. The top six teams in the league make the playoffs.

Pensacola will take on Columbus tomorrow on the road before returning home on March 16 to face the IceGators of Louisiana. Tickets to the 7:05 game are still available and start at just $10 for individuals, and as low as $8 for groups of ten or more.
