Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Ice Flyers jumped out to an early lead when Chris Rebernik took his own rebound and wrapped it into the goal just 1:56 into the game. Matt Whitehead and Brian Deeth picked up a point as well before the Surge tied it up a few minutes later. At 4:38 Michael Richard took an assist from Matthew Larke and buried the puck to even the score at one. Not to be outdone, Rob Campbell found Lorne Misita with the puck down low. Misita's shot was redirected into the goal by Dan Buccella at 9:12 to give the Ice Flyers a 2-1 lead that held into the first intermission.
The second period belonged to the Surge, specifically Matt Zultek. Zultek tied the game at 11:41 with a five on three strike from the top of the right circle. Later in the period Zultek struck again, using another powerplay to his advantage and sending in a shot from the middle of the right circle to give the Surge a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
The Ice Flyers had a 5-3 powerplay to start the third period. Just seconds after the Surge killed the powerplay, Dan Buccella found the puck right in front of the net and paddled it in to tie the game at three apiece just 1:37 into the frame. Mark Hinz and Brian Deeth both earned a point for helping set up Buccella. No other goals would score, and the Surge and the Ice Flyers headed to overtime for the fifth time this season.
Rebernik, Whitehead, and Hinz started the three on three overtime period for the Ice Flyers. Richard attempted to wrap a shot on Jamie Gilbert at the 45 second mark, but Gilbert smothered the puck and forced a faceoff. Deeth had a two on one and centered a pass to Joey Hughes but the subsequent shot was denied by Zaniboni. With just 58.4 seconds remaining in the overtime period Michael Richard sent a shot towards the goal that ricocheted off of Velemirovich and into the goal. Bieber also earned a point on the play the sealed the win for the Surge. Jamie Gilbert made 44 saves in the effort; Zaniboni countered with 29 saves for Mississippi.
