ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 15, 2003) – The Atlantic City Surf scored three runs in the first inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Somerset Patriots, Thursday afternoon, in front of 2,375 fans at the Sandcastle.

Surf starter Brian Williams (1-0) had a strong first outing of the season, tossing five innings and allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out five.

Atlantic City jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after leadoff man Vernon Spearman reached on a walk, advanced on a single by Ric Johnson and scored on a base hit by Chad Gambill. Johnson advanced to third on Gambill's single and reached home on a sacrifice fly by Emison Soto. Brandon Jackson knocked in Gambill three batters later on a base hit to centerfield.

With the score 3-1 in the sixth, Somerset cut Atlantic City's lead to one run after an RBI single by Tom McGee plated Jeff Nettles, who reached on a single and advanced to second after Emilio Escandon walked.

The Surf bullpen of Anthony Shelby, Mark Rutherford, and Randi Mallard held the Patriots scoreless in the final three innings to preserve the victory.

Mallard tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the season for Atlantic City.

Somerset hurler Rick Krivda (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two.

The Surf hit the road for a three-game series with the Camden Riversharks at Campbell Field, kicking off this year's "Expressway Series" sponsored by the South Jersey Transportation Authority, owner and operator of the Atlantic City International Airport. The first game of the series will be on Friday, May 16, at 6:35 p.m.
