
Surf Make it Two in a Row

Bridgewater, NJ - The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-4 in front of 6,564 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening to take the first two games of the three game series.
Somerset took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, catcher Sean Mulligan single to left field and scored on a double by third baseman Jeff Berblinger. Second baseman Emiliano Escandon followed with an RBI single up the middle that allowed Berblinger to score.
Atlantic City answered in the top of the fourth inning. Shortstop Victor Gutierrez reached on an error by Berblinger that allowed him to move to second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Ric Johnson. Gutierrez came around to score on an RBI double by first baseman Jose Velasquez. A walk by designated hitter Pete Incaviglia and a single by right fielder Keith Gordon loaded the bases for the Surf. Atlantic City then scored two more on RBI singles by center fielder Garry Matthews and second baseman Steve Hine to make the score 3-2.
The Surf added two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Gutierrez and catcher Pito Ramirez singled and Gutierrez came around to score on an RBI double by Velasquez. Ramirez then scored on a sacrifice fly by Incaviglia to make the score 5-2.
Somerset rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on RBI singles by right fielder Desi Wilson and designated hitter Charles Poe to cut the lead to 5-4 but fell short of tying the game.
Surf starter Anthony Chavez (3-0) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and four strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Patriots starter Justin Jensen (5-7) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings pitched. Reliever Anthony Shelby earned his second save of the season for the Surf.
The Somerset Patriots 2002 Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Thursday, August 8th against the Atlantic City Surf at 7:05 pm. Thursday's game includes Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield caps for the first 2,000 fans in attendance.
