
Bears Shut Out by Riversharks

Newark, NJ â August 7, 2002 â The Newark Bears dropped their second straight game to the Camden Riversharks, as they were shutout this afternoon 5-0 and they only managed four hits off of Del Matthews (8-5).
Camden got on the scoreboard in the first inning as a Creighton Gubanich single up the middle scored two to give the Riversharks a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, a Jesus Azuaje sacrifice fly scored Bryon Gainey to extend the lead to 3-0. Camden put up two more runs in the fifth inning when Alex Delgado homered, making it a 5-0 ballgame.
Newark starter Byron Batson (6-6) only lasted five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk to pick up his first loss in over a month. Bryan Malko made his Newark debut as he tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Batson.
Matthews was solid in his complete game shutout of the Bears, racking up 12 strikeouts against only one walk and held Newark to only four hits. No Bear was able to muster more than one hit, as all four hits were scattered among the last four batters in their line-up.
The Newark Bears will play game three of a three game series with the Camden Riversharks tomorrow evening at 6:35 pm as it will be Wayne Township night.
