ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 26, 2003) â Damian Sapp's two-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Nashua Pride snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Atlantic City Surf, Saturday evening in front of 2,345 fans at the Sandcastle.
Glenn Murray's RBI single in the first inning gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead, but the Surf countered in the bottom half of the inning with a one-run double off the bat of Juan Thomas that plated Brandon Jackson, who singled.
Murray, who finished with three hits on the day, hurt the Surf again with an RBI double that scored Dave Francia to put the Pride ahead, 2-1. Ben Candelaria tied the game up for Atlantic City with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
The Pride tallied three runs in the fifth led by Sapp's two-run shot, his league-leading 19th of the season and sixth against the Surf, to give Nashua a 5-2 lead.
Lauro Felix brought the Surf within two with a solo home run in the seventh inning, but Nashua would hold on for the victory.
Pride starter Carlos Chantres (6-2) allowed 13 hits but surrendered just three runs through 6.1 innings pitched, striking out six and walking zero to pick up the win. Tommy Taylor struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.
Atlantic City's Maximo Nunez (1-2) lasted four and two-third innings and allowed five runs off seven hits to take the loss.
Thomas paced the Surf offense going 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI while Felix added three hits.
The Surf fall to 8-7 in the second half while the Pride improve to 4-12.
ON DECK: The Surf will play the fifth game of their nine-game homestand against the Pride Sunday, July 27, at 5:05 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
