Surf Fall to Patriots

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 14, 2003) – Right-hander Brett Jodie tossed six effective innings and the Somerset bullpen held Atlantic City hitless through the final three frames to lead the Patriots over the Surf, 5-2, Wednesday evening in front of 2,310 fans at the Sandcastle.

The Patriots struck first in the second inning on a two-run home run by Robinson Cancel.

Somerset tallied three runs in the fifth inning after Cancel led off with a single, advanced to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt, and was doubled in by Matt Dryer. Two batters later, Michael Warner singled in Jeremy Luster and Melvin Nieves drove in Warner after he reached second on a stolen base, giving the Patriots a 5-1 lead.

The Surf made the score 5-2 in the bottom half of the fifth after Shane Monohan drove in Brandon Jackson, who reached on a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Jodie (1-1), who has eight games of Major League experience, allowed two runs off four hits through six innings pitched, striking out three and walking just one.

The Patriot bullpen of Steve Falteisek, Scott Aldred and Lesli Brea allowed no runs, no hits and walked just one in the final three innings to seal the victory.

Surf starter Andy High (0-1) lasted four and two-third innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out four and walking none.

Jeff Nettles paced Somerset offensively with three hits while Cancel, Warner and Dryer added two hits apiece.

Atlantic City's Jackson went 2-3 and scored both Surf runs.

The Surf and the Patriots will play the rubber match of the series on Thursday, May 15, for a "School Day Special" at 11:35 a.m., at the Sandcastle.
