ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 3, 2003) â The Bridgeport Bluefish tallied seven runs through the first four innings in a 9-6 victory over the Atlantic City Surf on Tuesday afternoon in front of a season-high 5,012 fans at the Sandcastle.
Surf starter Dave Carroll pitched himself into trouble from the very start of the contest, walking three in the first inning while surrendering a run on an RBI single by Mel Wearing.
In the second inning, an error by Surf shortstop Raul Marval with two outs kept the inning alive and the Bluefish capitalized, as Jose Amado and Cesar Devarez each roped run scoring doubles. After issuing a walk to Oreste Marrero, Carroll surrendered a two-run double to Willis Otanez, giving Bridgeport a 5-0 lead.
Carroll (1-2) lasted just two and one-third innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on eight hits while walking five.
Down 7-1 in the fourth inning, Atlantic City tagged on two runs after Ozzie Timmons led off with a walk and Emison Soto followed with an RBI double. Brandon Jackson drove in Soto on a single to centerfield to pull the Surf within four runs.
The hit extended Jackson's consecutive on-base streak to 22 straight games, the longest streak in the Atlantic League this season.
Bridgeport hurler Alex Lontayo (4-1) had a solid outing through seven innings pitched, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out four and walking just one.
Wearing added a two-run double in the eighth and finished the day 2-3 with three RBI and two walks. The Surf scored three runs in the ninth led by a solo homer by Jackson but came up short as Shane Monahan struck out to end the threat.
Marrero paced the Bluefish, now 14-15 on the year, with three hits while Angel Espada and Rodney Lindsey added two hits apiece.
Ric Johnson had three hits while Raul Marval and Soto had two hits each for Atlantic City, which drops to 15-15.
ON DECK: The Surf begin a five-game road trip on Thursday, June 5, against the Nashua Pride at Hollman Stadium.
