Berkshire Black Bears News Release

PITTSFIELD - The floodgates have officially been broken for the Berkshire Black Bears in the 2003 season. The Black Bears outlasted Les Capitales de Quebec in a 7-6 slugfest that took place at Wahconah Park Tuesday night. Reliever Eddie Aucoin (1-0) threw three scoreless innings in relief of starter Matt Minter to pick up the win, continuing his streak of scoreless innings which is now at eleven and two thirds. Matt Bailie pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, for his first save of the season.

The first three Berkshire hitters scored in the bottom of the first, but Quebec drew level with three of their own in the third. The Black Bears regained the lead as shortstop Raul Cruz (2-4, 3 RBIs) blasted the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning over the left-center field wall for his first homer of the year, with two men on. Quebec once again rallied for three runs in the fifth, which included a solo blast by first baseman John Ballon (3). However, the Black Bears answered in the bottom half of the 5th frame, as Pete Paciorek hit a one-out triple and was driven in by Shane Hopper's sacrifice fly to give the Pittsfield Nine the lead for good. Berkshire and Quebec finish their three game series at Wahconah Park Wednesday night, first pitch 6:05 pm.
