The Atlantic City Surf got a pair of three-run homers from Pete Incaviglia and Jose Velasquez to defeat the Newark Bears 8-7 before a huge crowd of 5500 at the Sandcastle Friday night. It was the fourth straight victory for the Surf which remained in a first-place tie with the Camden Riversharks in the South Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Atlantic City improved to 19-8 in the second half of the season.
Maximo Nunez earned the victory, working six innings while allowing five runs on seven hits. All five of the runs came on two Newark hits; a three-run by Jimmy Hurst and and two-run shot by Will Quintana. Newark''s 5-1 lead was short-lived as Velasquez clubbed a three-run homer in the third. That was the 700th homer in Surf history as Atlantic City became the firat Atlantic League team to hit 700 home runs.
Atlantic City took a 7-5 lead in the sixth on a three-run homer by Incavigalia. The Surf added another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Keith Gordon. Atlantic City would need that as Newark got two runs off a Surf closer Craig Mattson in the ninth inning and had the tying run at second before Mattson got Ryan Minor to ground out to second. Mattson got save No. 22 for his efforts.
The Surf are now 24-11 under manager Mitch Williams.
