
Keagle Dazzles in 8-2 Pioneers Win over Allenown

Greg Keagle (6-9) spun 8 innings of 3-hit ball to bounce back from his worst outing the year and Rafael Alvarez hit a towering HR off the top of the scoreboard in right-center as the Pioneers defeated the Allentown Ambassadors 8-2 Friday nigh at Dunn Field in front of 1,064 fans a Dunn Field.
Keagle dazzled in front of his home-town fans on Horseheads and Big Flats community night with his 2nd win in his previous 3 games. He had gone 1-8 before this current stretch. Keagle walked 2 and had 7 K's.
Rafael Alvarez launched his 9th HR of the season off the top of the scoreboard in the 7th inning to conclude the scoring for the Pioneers.
Michael Coleman went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's. In 2 games with the Pioneers he has driven in 5 runners. Brian Jones ended an 0-for-14 skid with a pair of doubles.
The Pioneers took a commanding lead with a 4-run rally in the 3rd to build a 5-1 advantage.
Elmira had scored 8 runs only once in the past month but they have reached that mark on back-to-back nights against the Ambassadors to begin the homestand.
Elmira has won back to back games to improve to 38-30 overall and 14-10 in the 2nd half. Allentown has the 2nd worst record in the league at 21-47 and stands at 7-16 in the 2nd half.
The win keeps the Pioneers within 6 games of 1st place New Jersey in the 2nd half race with 2 games remaining. The Jackals defeated Albany tonight 5-0. Elmira is 3 games ahead of Adirondack in the wild-card race determined by next-best overall record (in the event NJ wins both halves).
Bake Leonards (2-6) took the loss for Allentown surrendering 9 hits in 6.1ip allowing 7 runs, 6 earned.
Michael Coleman's double in the 1st scored Alvarez who had reached on an error to start the scoring.
Allentown prodcued the tying run in the 2nd with a walk, hit batter, hit and Sac-Fly by Matt Johnson.
Elmira scored 4 in the 3rd on 4 hits. Brandon Pernell sparked the rally with an infield single, stolen bases of 2nd and 3rd and a run scored on a poor throw to 3rd by ryan Bordenick. Alvarez walked and stole 2nd and went to 3rd on another Bordenick throwing error. He scored on coleman's single to LF. Pedro Quero beat out an infield hit. Jones doubled home Coleman and Bello hit a Sac-fly to score Quero giving the Pioneers a 5-1 lead.
Allentown made it 5-2 in the 5th with Schuyler Doakes singling, stealing 2nd and scoring on a single by Stephen larkin.
Elmira closed the scoring with 3 runs in the 7th.Ron Bush singled and Alvarez hit a towering HR off the top of the scoreboard in right-center making the score 7-2. Patrick Sexton replaced Leonards and allowed a single to Coleman who stole 2nd and scored on Jones' 2nd double.
Justin Stine fired a perfect 9th for the Pioneers to complete the combined 3-hitter.
