CHIVAS USA GEARS UP FOR 2009 MLS SUPERDRAFT ON THURSDAY: The Chivas USA coaching staff is on hand in St. Louis as it gets set for the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, where the Red-and-White own picks in the first two rounds for the first time since the team's inaugural SuperDraft in 2005. In the first round, Chivas USA is scheduled to select 9th overall; team also owns the 4th pick in the second round (19th overall). Previous first-round picks in Chivas USA history include goalkeeper Brad Guzan (2005) the team's first-ever SuperDraft selection, and midfielder Sacha Kljestan (2006), Chivas USA's reigning team MVP. Although Chivas USA has traded its third and fourth round spots in this year's draft, the Red-and-White's the two picks is one more than in 2008, when the team selected midfielder Keith Savage (4th round) as its only draftee. BORNSTEIN EARNS 'HOMETOWN HERO AWARD' AT LOS ANGELES SPORTS FANS CHOICE AWARDS: Chivas USA defender and Los Alamitos product Jonathan Bornstein received the Hometown Hero Award - given annually to Los Angeles professional athletes who dedicates their time to and support to local causes - at the 9th Annual Los Angeles Sports Fans Choice Awards on Tuesday night at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. Bornstein was nominated for his involvement with several causes, including the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, which raises money for children and families affected by cancer; the Wednesday's Child Program, which helps increase adoptions of foster children; and the Passback Program, which donates soccer equipment to teams and players in need all over the world. The 24-year-old UCLA alum was also honored this past October as Chivas USA's 2008 U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year for his work in the community.

CHIVAS USA GOALKEEPER DAN KENNEDY TRAINS WITH U.S. NATIONAL TEAM: Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy joined club teammates Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan in training with the United States National Team on Monday at The Home Depot Center in Carson as part of head coach Bob Bradley's squad. This is Kennedy's first participation in a U.S. National Team camp, coming after the Yorba Linda native posted a 1.03 GAA (goals-against average) in 9 games (8 starts) with Chivas USA during the 2008 MLS season. The U.S. is training in preparation for a friendly match on Jan. 24 against Sweden, also at The Home Depot Center, prior to its Feb. 11 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier against Mexico in Columbus. Kljestan and Bornstein have been training with the team since the start of the camp, on Jan. 4; both players played for the United States in its most recent World Cup Qualifier, a 2-0 win over Guatemala on Nov. 19.

'PANCHITO' MENDOZA, CHIVAS DE GUADALAJARA CAPTURE FIRST INTERLIGA TITLE AT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER: With a dramatic 4-2 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, Chivas de Guadalajara captured its first InterLiga title at The Home Depot Center on Sunday. The win qualifies the team for the Copa Libertadores, South America's biggest club competition, for the fourth time in five years. Chivas USA's sister club was the only squad in the eight-team tournament to finish undefeated, and Guadalajara's record earned it first place in the annual InterLiga, which ran from Jan. 2-11 in Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles. Chivas USA Original Francisco 'Panchito' Mendoza helped the team to the title, coming on as a substitute in two of Guadalajara's matches during the group phase of the tournament.
