Hill City Howlers News Release
Neftali Soto homered twice, doubled and drove-in four runs to lead Lynchburg to a 4-3 victory over Myrtle Beach on the Grand Strand. Soto is the only Hillcats with a multi-homer game, and Saturday night was his second of the season.
Lynchburg struck early with two runs in the top of the first inning. The first three batters for the Hillcats all got base hits, including a two-run double by Nefatli Soto to put the Cats in front. Myrtle Beach came right back though with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run by Gerry Rodriguez to tie the game at two.
Soto struck again in the third to give Lynchburg the lead again. A laser shot to left that got out of BB&T Coastal Field made it a 3-2 advantage for the Hillcats. It was Soto's team leading 19th home run of the season. Two innings later in the top of the fifth, it was Soto time again, as he hit another blast out of the ballpark out to left to make it a 4-2 contest. With his 21 long balls on the season, Soto is third in the Carolina League in the category and he now has three dingers in his last two games.
Myrtle Beach would rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. A run scored on the RBI single by Cody Johnson to pull the Birds back within a run. But closer Nick Christiani induced a ground ball double play to end the threat and preserve the victory.
The win went to starter Justin Walker (4-2) and the save to Christiani (4) for Lynchburg (31-35, 60-76). The loss went to starter Paul Clemens (0-4) for Myrtle Beach (31-37, 57-81). The Hillcats and Pelicans meet-up again on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. at Myrtle Beach. Catch all the live action on 105.5 FM KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
