Frederick Keys News Release

Wilmington's five-run first inning was too much to overcome for the Keys on Saturday night as Frederick fell in the series opener 6-3 at Frawley Stadium. The news of the night however was in Woodbridge, VA where the Potomac Nationals gave the 2010 Carolina League Playoffs clarity, defeating Kinston in game one of a doubleheader to clinch the second half pennant in the north eliminating Wilmington.

Frederick and Potomac will meet for the Northern Division crown in a best-of-five series beginning Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium.

The Keys took the early lead with a two-out first inning rally. RF Ronnie Welty doubled to right field and then scored on a groundball off of the bat of 3B Billy Rowell that was botched by Wilmington SS Christian Colon. 2B LJ Hoes then drove Rowell all the way around to score with a double to right-center field. The Keys had a 2-0 lead.

It would not last long however as Blue Rocks leadoff hitter Adrian Ortiz homered to start the first. It started a rally that saw ten men bat and five score on six hits before Keys starter Ryan O'Shea could settle in. O'Shea lasted five innings allowing six runs, only one more after the rocky first inning.

Frederick threatened for the big inning in the fifth with three consecutive hits to start the inning. But a Welty hot shot to left field was corralled and the rally lost steam.

The Keys got a solid effort from LHP Nate Nery from the pen going three shutout innings to keep Frederick in the game. The Keys could not reward his efforts however.

The series continues Sunday, September 5th at 1:35 p.m. from Frawley Stadium as the Keys send RHP Kenny Moreland to the hill. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior on The Keys Baseball Network.

Playoff tickets are on-sale as the Keys will face the Potomac Nationals in Game One of the Northern Division Championship Series Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or visit online at frederickkeys.com.
