Suns Winning Streak Snapped

Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Suns were unable to get the offense going late as their seven-game winning streak was snapped in a 5-3 loss to the Rome Braves at Municipal Stadium Thursday.

Hagerstown (49-60, 19-20) trailed 4-3 after five innings, and the Rome (50-59, 20-20) bullpen was able to lock down that lead. Jose Montilla was the first out of the pen for the Braves, and he retired all five batters he faced between the sixth and seventh innings. Victor Vodnik (S, 2) took over in the eighth and finished off the Rome victory. The righty tossed two scoreless frames and allowed only one hit.

With the loss, the Suns seven-game winning streak ends as their longest such streak of the season. It is the longest winning stretch for Hagerstown since the team won eight consecutive games June 23-30, 2017.

The Rome offense started off hot in this one against Suns starter Reid Schaller (L, 1-2). The Braves struck first in the second when Griffin Benson blasted his second home run in as many nights to put one run on the board. In the third, Rome loaded the bases with nobody out, and Braulio Vasquez came across the plate when Braden Shewmake bounced into a double play.

The Braves got one in the fourth and one more in the fifth against Schaller, scoring in four consecutive frames against the Suns righty. A Ricardo Rodriguez RBI single brought the run home in the fourth and Shewmake's RBI knock added another in the next inning. Schaller struck out four batters but walked five over 4.1 innings in his seventh start of the year.

After going hitless in the first three frames, the Hagerstown offense came alive in the fourth. The Suns started the inning with three consecutive hits against Braves starter Jose Olague (W, 9-6), capping it off with Jacob Rhinesmith's RBI single. Israel Pineda then knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and made it a 3-2 game.

Jackson Cluff cranked one over the right field wall in the fifth for his second home run of the season. It again cut the lead to one, but Olague was able to leave the game with the lead intact. The Rome righty lasted 5.1 innings.

Alex Troop relieved Schaller on the mound for the Suns and kept Hagerstown in the game. The lefty spun 4.2 frames and allowed only one run while striking out five. The one run he allowed came in the ninth. After a lead-off triple from Jeremy Fernandez, Vasquez picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Hagerstown completes its three-game series with Rome tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The Suns send RHP Joan Adon (9-3, 4.27 ERA) to the hill while the Braves will counter with RHP William Woods (0-3, 3.81 ERA).

The Suns are in the midst of a seven-game homestand against the Rome Braves and Columbia Fireflies. The stretch includes plenty of exciting promotions, including a Juan Soto Bobblehead giveaway, Sunday Funday, Shark Weekend and Summer Camp Day.
