Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - The Asheville Tourists are one of the hottest teams in the South Atlantic League. Asheville defeated the Lexington Legends 4-2 on Thursday night to win for the eighth time in their last 11 ballgames. The victory moved Asheville to within one game of first place in the South Atlantic League Southern division.

Trent Fennell took the mound on short noticed and pitched a gem in his McCormick Field debut. Fennell fired four innings without allowing a hit. The right-hander struck out five and set the pace for a great night of Tourists pitching.

Lexington's starting pitcher, Zach Haake, was equally as impressive with five shutout innings of his own. The Legends used a leadoff Home Run in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead; one of their four hits on the night.

The Tourists responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Will Golsan and Niko Decolati recorded consecutive singles to begin the inning and Terrin Vavra followed with a walk to load the bases. Coco Montes tied the game with an RBI single to right and Grant Lavigne gave Asheville a 2-1 lead with an RBI single to left.

Willie MacIver bounced into a fielder's choice that plated another run. Daniel Montano followed suit with another RBI fielder's choice to cap the four-run frame. Raymells Rosa and Alexander Martinez each pitched a pair of innings out of Asheville's bullpen behind Fennell. The two relievers did an excellent job taking the game to the ninth with the Tourists in front 4-2.

PJ Poulin came in to work the top of the ninth and Asheville's closer took it from there. Poulin retired the first two batters with a groundout and a strikeout. After a hit by pitch brought the tying run to the plate, PJ induced a soft groundball near second base that Montes fielded and recorded the game's final out.

The Tourists will attempt to sweep the Legends with the series finale scheduled for 7:05pm on Friday night.
