Columbia Fireflies News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Columbia's quickest nine-inning contest of the season took place on Wednesday and resulted in a 3-0 victory over Kannapolis. The club's fifth shut-out win of the season lasted just two hours and 13 minutes. The shortest nine-inning game in franchise history occurred back on May 27, 2018 (two hours and six minutes).
Mark Vientos started his road trip off in style with a two-run blast to dead centerfield in the first inning. That's all the run support the visitors would need. However, the Fireflies put the icing on the cake with a run in the fifth stanza. After Shervyen Newton tripled, Hayden Senger knocked in the 20-year-old with a sacrifice fly.
The Fireflies sent four hurlers to the mound and all were locked in from the start. Jose Butto made his 19th start of the season and did not allow a baserunner. Alec Kisena (W, 2-2) was next in line and turned in one of his best performances of the season. The righty spun five brilliant frames and matched his season high with six strikeouts. Danny Hrbek needed just 16 pitches in a scoreless eighth inning. Allan Winans slammed the door with a smooth ninth to earn his eighth save of the season. This group absorbed just three hits from the Intimidators.
Winans is now 8-for-8 in save chances with all eight coming in the second half.
Columbia returns to action on Thursday night at Intimidators Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and RHP Daison Acosta (1-2, 3.50) is slated to start for the Fireflies. LHP Bernardo Flores (0-0, 0.00) takes the mound for the Intimidators. You can listen to the action starting at 6:45 p.m. on FirefliesLiveStream.com.
