Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (17-19, 54-52) won 3-2 in 10 innings against the Montgomery Biscuits (19-17, 53-53) at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Sunday evening.
Paul Gran hit a walk-off RBI double to win the game for the Suns, as he drove home Kevin Mattison to end the game in the bottom of the tenth. This is the second time Gran has had a walk-off hit for the Suns, and Jacksonville now has eight walk-off victories in 2011.
Ramon Benjamin (2-0) earned the win by tossing the final two innings in scoreless fashion for the Suns, while Montgomery's Zach Quate (4-5) took the loss after giving up the facing two batters and giving up two doubles in the tenth.
Ben Lastater's solo homer in the bottom of the second started Jacksonville's scoring, as the designated hitter connected on his twelfth homer of the season. The Biscuits tied the game at one in the top of the fourth on Henry Wrigley's RBI double. The Suns broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth, with Ryan Curry scoring Lasater on a sacrifice fly to put the Suns up 2-1.
Thanks to strong pitching by starter Joey O'Gara, the Jacksonville lead remained until the eighth. O'Gara threw seven innings allowing only a run on five hits, and his final two innings on the mound were in perfect fashion. Montgomery starter Jim Paduch also went seven innings, giving up a pair of runs on three hits.
Facing Suns reliever Jhan Marinez in the top of the eighth, the Biscuits put runners on the corners with one out. With Cole Figueroa at the plate, Shawn O'Malley broke for second in attempt to steal the bag. O'Malley reached safely to get the stolen base, and a throwing error by Jacksonville catcher Kyle Skipworth on the play brought home Isaias Velasquez from third to tie the game at two.
Biscuits reliever Matt Bush threw scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to keep the game tied, before Quate gave up a leadoff double to Mattison to start the tenth before Gran's game winning double.
The Suns and Biscuits will play the second game of the five game series on Monday night at the Baseball Grounds. Monday's game will feature "St. John's County Night," where the Suns will celebrate the culture of St. John's County. Also it will be "Belly Buster Monday," with fans being able to participate with buying a $20.00 home plate box seat that includes all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, ice cream treats and soft drinks.
Left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarez (1-2, 5.18 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville against Montgomery's right-hander Chris Archer (5-6, 4.53 ERA). Monday's game will start at 7:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
