Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (4-5) took a 2-1 series lead in their four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws (5-5) Saturday night, thanks to a 6-4 win in front of 1,374 at Municipal Stadium.

Hagerstown broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth thanks to a two-run blast off the bat of catcher Raudy Read. It was his second homerun of the season and the team's eighth in nine games.

It was another Read hit, this one a single up the middle, that gave the Suns their other two-run frame in the game. Up 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, CF Dale Carey began the inning by drawing a walk. Designated hitter Jose Marmolejos then hit a groundball to third, which 3B Derek Campbell threw wildly to first. That allowed Carey to score and Marmolejos to get to second. Read's hit then brought Marmolejos home to make it 6-2.

Those two runs proved to be the difference as Campbell tried to make up for his fielding miscue in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Campbell stroked a ground ball single to left. That drove in two runs and wound up setting the final score, as RHP Mario Sanchez got RF Herlis Rodriguez to then ground into a force out to end the game.

Lakewood got out to the initial lead in the top of the first for the second straight night thanks to an RBI single by LF Cord Sandberg to make it 1-0. The Suns responded an inning later when 2B Brennan Middleton doubled home a run with two outs to knot the score at 1-1.

In the fifth, Hagerstown stretched its two-run lead to three on an RBI single by Carey. That was answered in the seventh when catcher Deivi Grullon doubled home 1B Rhys Hoskins to again make it a two-run affair.

Starting RHP Drew Van Orden (1-0) took home the win for the Suns. He went a season-long six innings, surrendering just one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Sanchez pitched the final three innings for Hagerstown to pick up his first save of the year. Starting RHP Ranfi Casimiro (0-2) suffered the loss for Lakewood. He threw 4.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

These two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon in Hagerstown when the Suns will send RHP Phillips Valdez (0-1) to the mound for his second start of the season. He will square off against RHP Chris Oliver (1-0) for the BlueClaws. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05pm.
