Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs pounced on the Savannah Sand Gnats' bullpen for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull a 6-4 win away from the Gnats. The win was the second straight for Charleston (6-4) over the Gnats (3-6).
The Gnats held a 2-1 lead entering the eighth inning. Alberto Baldonado took the mound after a 1-2-3 seventh. He issued a one out walk to speedster DH Jorge Mateo, who stole second and third and came home on a bloop single into right field by CF Dustin Fowler that tied the game at 2-2. Catcher Eduardo de Oleo doubled to right to bring home Fowler with the go-ahead run at 3-2. Two batters later, 3B Allen Valerio ripped a double over into the leftfield corner to plate two and give Charleston a 5-2 advantage.
The Gnats answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth to pull within a run. RF Patrick Biondi singled on a hit and run to score the first run. However, the inning ended with the tying run stranded at second.
Charleston added a run against reliever Shane Bay in the top of the ninth to complete the game's scoring.
The Gnats squandered a strong pitching performance from starter Casey Meisner, who held the 'Dogs to one run in six innings. Meisner stuck-out eight and walked two.
The Gnats took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. CF John Mora singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Stefan Sabol's RBI single into centerfield.
