Asheville, NC - Thanks to a pair of big innings early, the Greenville Drive (4-6) took down the Asheville Tourists (6-3) 10-4 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at McCormick Field to earn a split of the twinbill.
A three-run first inning began with a Derek Miller double and a Mauricio Dubon single to put runners at the corners, and Carlos Mesa drove home the first run with a groundout. Later in the frame, Michael Chavis drew a bases loaded walk from Logan Sawyer (1-1), and Francisco Tellez's fielder's choice brought home another run.
After Asheville answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, a four-run second inning forced Sawyer out of the game. The inning highlights were an RBI double from Miller, a two-run triple by Nick Longhi and an RBI single by Rafael Devers that brought on a pitching change.
Chavis added some fireworks in the fourth inning by driving a Scott Firth offering to right-center for a two-run homer, scoring Longhi, who doubled with one out.
Williams Jerez (1-1) earned the victory with three innings of shutout relief with a pair of strikeouts.
The pitching shone in game one of Saturday's action, as the Tourists were able to squeak out a 2-1 win.
Jeffry Fernandez (0-1) took a tough luck loss for the Drive after allowing just two runs and four hits in five innings with no walks and five punchouts.
Sean Dwyer gave Asheville a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo homer to right-center. The Drive answered back in the top of the third to tie the game when Joseph Monge reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.
After Forrest Wall drew a walk against Fernandez to lead off the fifth, he came all the way around on Robbie Perkins's RBI double to put Asheville ahead for good.
Longhi and Miller each collected four hits in the doubleheader for the Drive.
The series will wrap up on Sunday afternoon in Asheville, with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 PM. RH Michael Kopech (0-1, 7.36) takes the mound for the Drive looking to even the series, while the Tourists will counter with RH Carlos Polanco (0-1, 5.40).
