Suns Take Both Ends of Doubleheader from Power

July 9, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release

Hagerstown, MD-On Saturday night at Municipal Stadium the Hagerstown Suns (51-36, 11-6) downed the West Virginia Power (41-43, 6-11) in both contests of a day/night doubleheader, winning game one by a score of 9-5 and taking the backend 5-0 in shutout fashion. Rainfall on Friday afternoon forced a pair of seven innings games today. Hagerstown won the home series against the West Virginia and now owns a (6-2) season head-to-head record with the Power.

In the opening game of the twin bill, the Suns would have to play come-from-behind baseball. Hagerstown LHP Matt Grace, who was later let off the hook for the loss, only made it through 1.0 inning, allowing four earned runs in the 1st inning on five hits, including an infield single by 2B Kevin Mort that ricocheted off Grace's leg and took him out of the game. West Virginia received an RBI single from 1B Cole White to left field, a double off the bat of C Elias Diaz into right center field, and the RBI carom from Mort. Diaz stole home for the fourth Power run.

Later, in the 3rd inning, with West Virginia leading 5-2, Hagerstown blasted the number two overall draft pick from the 2010 MLB Draft, RHP Jameson Taillon (2-2), the losing pitcher of record, for five earned runs. RF Kevin Keyes crushed a two-RBI single into right field with the bases loaded, 1B Russell Moldenhauer lofted an RBI sacrifice fly, and SS Jason Martinson tattooed a two-run home run over the batter's eye in center field, his 10th homer of the season.

RHP Shane McCatty (1-2), the winning pitcher, went 4.0 innings in relief of Grace, and surrendered just one earned run on three hits with no walks, while striking out three.

Hagerstown piled on two more runs in the 5th inning when 2B Adrian Sanchez laced a two-RBI single into left field plating the single of LF Wade Moore and the bunt single of CF Chris Curran.

In game two, RHP Taylor Jordan (9-4), the winning pitcher, spun an absolute gem. Jordan threw the first complete game shutout of the 2011 season for the Hagerstown staff. Jordan mowed down the first ten batters he faced before allowing a one-out single in the 4th inning to LF Andy Vasquez.

Jordan went the distance, motoring through 7.0 scoreless innings, matching his season-high, while scattering four singles and fanning two, the last two hitters he faced.

LHP Colton Cain (5-7), the losing pitcher of record, despite allowing just one earned run, took the loss after no run support to cover his start. Cain tossed 2.2 innings and gave up two hits and two walks.

Hagerstown provided a bevy of offense after an RBI single from DH David Freitas to left field in the 3rd inning, with a four-run 5th frame. The Suns brought eight men to the plate and received a triple through Vasquez in left field to lead off the inning. Sanchez went the other way with a chopper over Mort at second base to bring in Taylor. With RHP Zack Von Rosenberg on the mound, Sanchez took off trying to steal second base and Von Rosenberg launched a ball passed the tarp up the right field line. Sanchez, credited with the stolen bag, rounded third base, and scored the second run of the inning. Freitas was then hit by a pitch before Keyes launched a double off the padding in center field to score Freitas. LF Sean Nicol then ripped a rope to left field summoning home Keyes.

This was the Suns ninth shutout victory of the 2011 campaign. Hagerstown has only been blanked four times this year.

Hagerstown will wrap up the four game series tomorrow with the game four finale. The Suns will welcome the West Virginia Power for a 4:05pm first pitch. Wall-to-wall radio broadcast coverage will begin with a 3:50pm Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show on WJEJ AM 1240. The pitching matchup will bring LHP Paul Applebee (5-2, 4.27) to face RHP Tyler Waldron Colton Cain (6-4, 4.16).
