JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Suns suffered their second shutout of the season as they were defeated by the Mobile BayBears, 6-0, in front of the 3,724 fans Sunday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Kennard Jones lined a triple to left center to lead off the game. Brian Burgamy followed with a ground out to Suns shortstop Joel Guzman giving the BayBears (42-60 overall, 14-18 second half) a 1-0 advantage. In the same inning, Corey Smith hit a two-out solo home run off Suns starter and eventual losing Chad Billingsley. Billingsley (8-5) surrendered four runs in the fourth inning as the BayBears bounced their lead to 6-0.
Suns reliever Beltran Perez replaced Billingsley and tossed a season-high four scoreless innings. Perez also retired 12-of-14 batters and picked up a season-high six strikeouts. Suns reliever Carlos Alvarez pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Suns (56-48, 18-16) managed three lead off singles first, second and fourth innings, but the potential scoring opportunities were quashed by BayBears starter Jose Oyervidez. Oyervidez (5-7) earned the win, striking out six and combined with BayBears reliever Paul Abraham to retire 11 Suns batters in a row.
Suns right-hander Joel Hanrahan (6-6, 4.78 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Tennessee Smokies righty Dustin Nippert (5-3, 3.00) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Smokies Park in Sevierville, Tenn.
