HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads dropped the series opener against the Hagerstown Suns, 5-3, before 547 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night . The game was delayed for 1:07 during the bottom of the sixth inning due to inclement weather.

Hagerstown (19-15) swung in front right away in the top of the first against Hickory LHP Will Lamb. 2B Cutter Dykstra and CF Billy Burns hit back-to-back doubles to start the game, tallying an early run for the Suns. After a walk and a fly ball that enabled Burns to advance to third, C Adrian Nieto doubled the lead with an RBI single, making it 2-0.

A solo home run by DH Justin Miller in the top of the second tacked another run on for the Suns, but the 'Dads (19-15) responded in the bottom of the third. With one down and the bases empty, 1B Kevin Torres was hit by a pitch from RHP Wirkin Estevez. 2B Rougned Odor then singled Torres to third, before SS Luis Sardinas brought him in with an RBI single for the 'Dads first run. LF Chris Grayson followed with an RBI double off the left-field wall, plating Odor to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Crawdads completed the comeback in the bottom of the fourth. CF Zach Cone led off with a single and raced to second on a passed ball charged to Nieto. C Kellin Deglan then advanced Cone to third with a sacrifice bunt, and RF Jordan Akins followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, squaring the score at 3-3.

Hickory then threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as the rain started to come down. With one down, 3B Drew Robinson and Cone worked consecutive walks against RHP Ryan Dupra, putting two men on. Deglan was about to step up, but the rain began pouring down and the umpires called for the tarp, sending the game into a delay. After a break of 1:07, the game resumed and LHP Christian Meza (W, 3-1) induced a line drive from Deglan that was retired by 1B Brett Newsome, who doubled up Cone by beating him back to first, ending the frame with the tie intact.

The Suns moved back in front in the top of the eighth against LHP Andrew Faulkner (L, 0-2). 3B Matthew Skole drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a single by Nieto. LF J.P. Ramirez lifted the Suns back in front with an RBI single, scoring Skole for the 4-3 lead. After a double play left only Nieto on at third base, Miller struck with an RBI base hit to pad the Hagerstown lead to two runs.

The Suns RHP Aaron Bennett (S, 3), who retired the final out in the bottom of the eighth, dealt a scoreless bottom of the ninth to close the 5-3 win for Hagerstown.
