CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Southern League announced Monday Jacksonville Suns left-handed starter Justin Nicolino has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the time frame between August 12-18.

The Florida native earned the honor for his outing on August 16 versus Birmingham, when he earned the victory after firing six scoreless innings and yielding just three hits, while setting a career-high with 13 strikeouts against the Barons. The 13 punchouts were also the most in a game by a Suns hurler since Scott Elbert fanned 13 Montgomery Biscuits on July 27, 2006 in Montgomery, as well as tied for the second-best single-game total by a Suns pitcher in the Bragan Field era dating back through the 2003 season.

Nicolino owns a 3-2 record and 5.52 ERA (18 ER in 29.1 IP) in his six starts for the Suns since being transferred to Jacksonville from High-A Jupiter on July 18. In his 18 prior starts with the Hammerheads in 2013, the southpaw accumulated a 5-2 record and 2.23 ERA (24 ER in 96.2 IP), with his earned-run average pacing the Florida State League at the time of his promotion.

The 21-year-old becomes the sixth Suns player to be honored with a weekly award by the Southern League this year, including the second Pitcher of the Week award. Right-hander Henderson Alvarez was named Pitcher of the Week for the span between June 24-30 while with the Suns on a Major League Rehab Assignment, while former Suns outfielders Marcell Ozuna (April 22-28), Christian Yelich (May 6-12), and Kyle Jensen (June 3-9), along with current Suns outfielder Danny Pertusati (August 5-11), have been named Hitter of the Week.

The Suns begin a doubleheader this afternoon against the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch for the twinbill opener has been set for 5:15 p.m. at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, Tenn.
