Pittsfield Suns News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA (July 16, 2015) - The Pittsfield Suns succumbed to the Brockton Rox, 5-4, Thursday night at Wahconah Park, despite a late inning surge by the Suns that tied the game in the ninth inning.
The bases were relatively quiet until the fourth inning. Brockton's Matt Dauby singled, stole second and would then advance to third on an error by Pittsfield's second baseman. Tommy Marcinczyk tripled a batter later to score the Rox' first run of the contest.
The scoring continued in the fifth for Brockton who plated two additional runs, all unearned after an error pitcher River Carbone, to increase their lead to 3-0.
The Suns were able to cut into the lead in the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by Derek Bauer and Tyler Lyne and a walk to Ryan Olmo loaded the bases. The patient Casey McCone watched four straight balls and the Brockton would walk in the Suns' first run of the night. After a pitching change and a subsequent out, Dan Palazzo walked with the bases loaded to score the second run of the frame for Pittsfield, making the score 3-2.
The Rox would manufacture a run in the ninth to lead the Suns 4-2. The Suns answered right back and plated two runs in the bottom of the frame to even the score and sending the game into extra innings.Â
Despite the late comeback, a victory was not in the cards for the Suns, as Brockton would score one in the 11th inning after an error by the Suns shortstop would put Billy Endris at second before Joe Drpich singled, giving the Rox a 5-4 lead. Pittsfield was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, giving the visiting team the 5-4 victory.
Suns starter, River Carbone, threw five innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Robbie Coursel, Brockton starter, would pitch 5.1 innings, giving up four hits, one earned run and struck out five Suns batters. Rox reliever Trent Berg would get the win tossing 5.2 innings despite giving up four hits and two earned runs, while Suns' Dom Grillo was charged with the loss. Â
The Suns travel to Seacoast tomorrow night to take on the Mavericks, but are back at Wahconah Park this Saturday, July 18 for a doubleheader against the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs. The first seven-inning game will begin at 6 PM, with the second of the two games taking place approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
