Suns, Jackson shut out Barons

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -– The Suns did not permit a runner past second base in a 2-0 victory against the Birmingham Barons on Sunday in front of 4,682 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Suns starter Edwin Jackson (1-1) pitched seven innings, striking out five and walking none while throwing 84 pitches. Jackson, 19, is the youngest player in the Southern League.

The Suns (13-11) won their fifth in a row, utilizing little ball to its advantage. Derek Michaelis walked to lead off the second inning, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored when Dave Detienne grounded to third and reached on a fielding error. Michaelis stole his first base since July 12, 2001.

Detienne led the Suns with two hits.

Jackson, Steve Langone and Lino Urdaneta combined to pitch the Suns' first nine-inning shutout since July 30, 2002. Urdaneta retired the Barons in order in the ninth to earn his third save.

Dennis Ulacia (0-4) started for Birmingham and earned the loss despite allowing two runs over 6-1/3 innings. The Barons (10-13) have lost two in a row after winning five consecutive games previously.

Left-hander Eric Stults (2-1, 6.23 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Suns against Barons righty Enemencio Pacheco (1-0, 0.47) at 11:05 a.m. Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The game will be broadcast on www.jaxsuns.com.

SUNS SPOTS: The Suns haven't walked a batter since the seventh inning Friday at Chattanooga, a span of 20-2/3 innings.
