Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (18-17) fell just short of a series victory on Saturday night, falling to the West Virginia Power (15-20) 7-6 in 10 innings.

Hagerstown got the first lead in the bottom of the first, getting runs off a Justin Bloxom sacrifice fly off Hunter Strickland to score Francisco Soriano and a passed ball by catcher Josue Peley to allow Dan Lyons to score from third, giving the Suns a 2-0 lead.

The Power struck back the next half inning, leading off with a Kyle Morgan home run to right off Suns starter Paul Demny. After Peley and Elevys Gonzalez reached, Benji Gonzalez bunted in front of the plate. Catcher Adrian Nieto's throw was wide, allowing Peley to score. Three batters later, Benji Gonzalez stole second, leading Elevys Gonzalez to steal home on the throw, putting West Virginia in the lead 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Suns took back the lead. With two away and runners on the corners, J.R. Higley doubled down the left field line, scoring Destin Hood and J.P. Ramirez to put Hagerstown up 4-3.

West Virginia responded in the top of the next inning with two runs. Jarek Cunningham hit a double with one out. The next batter, Aaron Baker doubled to right to score Cunningham. Two batters later, David Rubinstein's double to right brought Baker home for a 5-4 lead.

The game continued to go back and forth as Hagerstown took back the lead the next half inning. Eury Perez led off with a line drive home run to right, his first of the season, to tie the game at five. The Suns got runners on the corners for Steven Souza, who hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Soriano from third to take back the lead at 6-5.

The score remained that way until the top of the eighth. David Rubinstein led off with a walk against Shane Erb, advancing to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch. Peley followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Rubinstein to tie the game at six. The game went into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, the Power got a man on first with two out against Patrick Arnold (0-1). Peley hit a ball down the third base line. Souza made the grab but made a throwing error. Kyle Morgan scored to give West Virginia the 7-6 lead, which was the eventual final score.

Demny got a no decision after throwing six innings, allowing five runs, just three earned, and striking out two. Erb threw 1.2 innings, allowing one run. Arnold gets the loss after two-and-a-third, giving up one unearned run.

Strickland does not get a decision after pitching five innings, allowing six runs, five of them earned. Zach Foster (2-0) gets the win after pitching the final two hitless innings for West Virginia.

With the win, the Suns and Power split the four game set. Hagerstown continues their homestand with a four-game series against the Asheville Tourists starting on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 4:05 p.m. The Power returns home for a four-game homestand against the Delmarva Shorebirds starting on Sunday.
