CHARLESTON, SC- Augusta starting pitcher Jorge Bucardo threw 7.0 scoreless innings and allowed only two hits, as the Augusta GreenJackets defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 3-1, in front of 4,444 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday night.
With the victory, the GreenJackets climb to 21-15, while the RiverDogs drop their second straight game and fall to 17-19.
Bucardo (2-2) notched a career-high nine strikeouts in the win and gave up just two infield singles. The Nicaragua native retired 10 straight batters between the fourth and seventh innings.
Augusta struck for a 2-0 lead in the fourth against Charleston starter Shaeffer Hall on a two-run home run by Hector Sanchez, his second of the year.
Dan Cook's RBI single in the sixth upped the advantage to 3-0.
The RiverDogs were able to avoid a shutout with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, as Luke Murton tattooed his sixth home run of the season off southpaw Chris Gloor to set the final margin at 3-1. Gloor still registered his first save of the season in tossing the final 2.0 innings.
Hall (2-2) worked 7.2 innings for the RiverDogs, allowing three runs on eight hits while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts.
Cook, Luke Anders and Even Crawford all had two hits for the GreenJackets.
The RiverDogs go down to Georgia to take on the Rome Braves for a four-game series from May 16-19. The first contest of the series is set for Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Charleston sends right-hander Sean Black (2-3, 6.42) to the mound to face Rome's left-hander Chris Masters (1-2, 1.18).
