PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (29-35, 59-75) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (35-29, 76-58) by a 5-2 score in the fourth game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Tuesday night.
Jacksonville starter Matt Tomshaw (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in his five and two-thirds innings of work. Wahoos starter Sal Romano (6-11) earned the win with eight scoreless innings where he allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out six batters. Carlos Gonzalez got the final out for Pensacola in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the year.
Romano set down the first 14 consecutive batters of the game before Peter Mooney had a two-out single in the top of the fifth. With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the sixth, there were two outs and the bases loaded when Tomshaw allowed a two-run single to Ray Chang that gave Pensacola a 2-0 lead. Travis Ballew entered from the Suns bullpen then allowed a two-run double to Joe Hudson that put Pensacola's lead at 4-0. The Wahoos added a run an inning later off Suns reliever Hunter Cervenka, when a double steal saw Phillip Ervin steal second base as Alex Blandino stole home to put the advantage at 5-0.
After Romano's eight innings, Pensacola turned to right-handed reliever Nick Ehret for the ninth. He set down the first two batters before Kenny Wilson singled, then Alex Glenn brought Wilson home on an RBI single to get the Suns on the scoreboard at 5-1. Later Garrett Weber had an RBI single to score Glenn to cut Pensacola's lead to 5-2, which would be the final. Gonzalez entered from the bullpen and retired Mooney on a pop out to second base to end the game.
Miami Marlins infielder and tonight's Suns first baseman Derek Dietrich was 0-for-4 in his fourth game of his major league rehab assignment with Jacksonville.
