July 31, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
Another close game on the road did not go the way of the Hagerstown Suns (12-23, 48-57) as they fall to the Greensboro Grasshoppers (19-16, 51-54) 5-4 in their second consecutive one-run loss.
The Suns got on the scoreboard first in the first inning with an RBI double by Destin Hood to score Rick Hague from first for an early 1-0 lead.
Greensboro responded in the bottom of the second. With Taylor Krick off third, Jose Duarte hit an infield single down the third base line off the end of the bat for an RBI to tie the game. Duarte would score two pitches later after a stolen base, an error and a wild pitch brought him home to give Greensboro the 2-1 lead.
Next inning, Justin Bass with one out hit a solo home run off Suns starter Josh Smoker to left field for a 3-1 advantage.
Hagerstown responded in the next half inning off Greensboro starter Edgar Olmos (3-4). With one out, Justino Cuevas drew a walk followed by a Eury Perez single. Next batter, Jeff Kobernus hit an infield single to third to score Cuevas. Rich Hague followed with an RBI fielder's choice to second, bringing Perez home to tie the game at three.
In the fifth, Greensboro regained the lead off two consecutive RBI singles off Suns reliever Shane McCatty (0-1) by Rand Smith and Krick to regain the lead at 5-3 in favor of the Grasshoppers.
The Suns had their best chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh after getting the bases loaded. Kobernus lead off with a reach on error followed by singles from Hague and Justin Bloxom. Destin Hood grounded into a double play which scored Kobernus to cut the deficit to one plus advance Hague to third, however J.P. Ramirez struck out to end the inning.
Smoker went three innings, allowing three runs, just two earned, in his start. McCatty got the loss after throwing three innings in relief, allowing two runs in the fifth with two strikeouts. Kyle Morrison and Rob Wort each pitched a scoreless frame.
Olmos got the win after throwing five innings, allowing three runs. Arquimedes Caminero got his second save after throwing a scoreless ninth.
Hagerstown went down in order in the eighth and ninth to end the game, falling 5-4.
The Suns will play the final game of the road series against the Grasshoppers on Sunday starting at 4:00 p.m.
