Hagerstown, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (31-22) shutout the Delmarva Shorebirds (21-32) in a 12-0 rout at Municipal Stadium on Thursday night.
Suns starter Nathan Karns (3-0) won his second straight start with six scoreless innings and four strike outs. The Suns pitching staff allowed just five singles in the game as Ben Hawkins (2 IP) and Chris McKenzie (1 IP) combined to complete the shutout out of the bullpen.
Jason Martinson had four RBIs, including a three-run home run to open the scoring for Hagerstown in the third inning. Martinson now leads the team and is second in the South Atlantic League (SAL) with 52 RBIs on the season. Matt Skole went-back-to-back with Martinson, blasting his team-leading 12th homer, which is good for second in the SAL. Justin Miller went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Caleb Ramsey also enjoyed a three hit game with an RBI. Billy Burns was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Shorebirds' starting pitcher Justin Moore (0-1) suffered the loss allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits over four innings of work. Overall, the Suns scored six unearned runs in the game, taking advantage of four errors on the diamond by the Shorebirds.
The Suns and Shorebirds will play game two of the series at Municipal Stadium on Friday night when lefty Kylin Turnbull (2-3) takes the mound for Hagerstown against Delmarva's RHP Miguel Chalas (4-3).
