Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - Six of the Asheville Tourists' 11 hits against the Augusta GreenJackets went for extra bases as the Tourists scored 11 unanswered runs in an 11-3 win over the GreenJackets on Thursday night.
With the GreenJackets leading 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Tourists got on the board on Delta Cleary's RBI groundout to make it a 3-1 game. Augusta starter Kyle Crick retired four in a row after that before allowing a two-out solo home run in the fourth by Will Swanner - the first of the year against Crick - to make it a 3-2 game.
In the fifth, the Tourists batted around and scored five runs to end Crick's evening. Crick allowed a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. Cleary's second RBI groundout of the game tied things at three while the Tourists took the lead at 4-3 on Trevor Story's groundout after that. Sam Mende reached on an RBI infield single to make it a 5-3 lead for the Tourists and end Crick's night. Reliever Paul Davis allowed back-to-back RBI doubles to Harold Riggins and Will Swanner to cap Asheville's five-run fifth and give the Tourists a 7-3 lead.
Crick (1-4) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks in 4.2 innings, striking out five. It was the seventh time in his nine starts that he's finished with five strikeouts or more.
The GreenJackets loaded the bases without the virtue of a hit in the sixth and sent Jesus Galindo to the plate as the tying run with two outs. Galindo struck out to the end the inning and the GreenJackets wouldn't get any closer. In the bottom of the inning, the Tourists scored four two-out runs to jump to an 11-3 advantage. Cleary doubled home a run and Sam Mende tripled home two more.
On the Mende triple, Kelby Tomlinson's relay throw to third went into the Augusta dugout to score Mende. Tomlinson was charged with an error on the play - ending Augusta's consecutive errorless games streak at nine. The streak broke a South Atlantic League record formerly held by the Charleston (WV) Wheelers in 1994.
Asheville starter Ben Alsup (7-1) scattered three runs and eight hits in seven innings to get the win for the Tourists. It was the fourth straight game that the GreenJackets have faced a starter who fired seven innings.
Augusta got their early lead on Ben Thomas's first-inning RBI single, back-to-back doubles in the second from Jeff Arnold and Garrett Buechele and an RBI single by Jose Cuevas in the third to go up 3-0.
The GreenJackets will try to avoid their third straight loss on Friday night, sending Kevin Couture (2-3, 2.53) to the mound to face Alex Gillingham (2-3, 4.81). First pitch from Asheville comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Tuesday June 5th to open a three-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
