Asheville Tourists News Release

Asheville fell behind 3-0 in their first meeting of the season with Augusta, but scored 11 unanswered to win Thursday night's game 11-3. Asheville played an excellent all-around game by hitting, fielding, and pitching exceptionally well.

Ben Alsup (7-1, 4.57) matched Tourists starter Danny Winkler with his seventh win of the season. They are tied for the most wins in the league. Alsup worked seven innings and did not allow a run from the fourth inning on. Asheville's righty has worked at least five innings in all ten of his starts this year.

The GreenJackets scored once in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Tourists responded in the bottom of the third with their first run of the game. Delta Cleary Jr. hit an RBI groundout to plate David Kandilas. Will Swanner hit his sixth Home Run of the year in the fourth; a solo shot making it a 3-2 ballgame.

In the fifth, Asheville broke the game open. The T's loaded the bases with no outs and used back-to-back RBI groundouts to take a 4-3 lead. Sam Mende hit an infield single with two outs to score their third run of the inning and then raced home on Harold Riggins' double to left. Swanner followed up with a double to score Riggins and Asheville led 7-3 after five.

In the sixth, Asheville rallied for another four runs, all with two outs. Humphries and Cleary Jr. hit back-to-back doubles and after a Trevor Story walk, Mende plated the runners with a triple. When the throw to third went array, Mende jogged home on the play.

Mike Wolford made his home debut with Asheville and threw a perfect eighth inning while Nelson Gonzalez finished off Augusta with a scoreless ninth. The same two teams are back at it tomorrow night with a 7:05pm first pitch.
