JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Suns surpassed the all-time Jacksonville baseball attendance record during the team's most recent homestand, which ended last night. The team is in its first year playing at the new Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Suns 2003 attendance figure surged to 273,525 through 50 openings for an average of 5,471 fans per game. The previous attendance record was 254,882, set in 1998, when the Suns advanced to the Southern League Finals and featured current major leaguers Gabe Kapler and Robert Fick.

"We couldn't be happier with the turnout of the fans this season," Suns General Manager Peter Bragan, Jr. said. "The new ballpark has been very well supported by the people of Jacksonville and the fact that we broke this record so easily is a testament to our fans and just how special the Baseball Grounds are.

With 16 home dates remaining in the 2003 season, the Suns are on pace to draw over 350,000 people this season to the Baseball Grounds. That would be the second best attendance in Southern League history. The Birmingham Barons hold the league record of 467,867 in 1994 when Michael Jordan was a member of the team.

"We are heading into the dog days of summer and football season is starting, so we have our work cut out for us to keep the attendance up, but we have some great promotions planned, including bringing in The Crabb Family for a post-game gospel concert, our old time favorite Used Car Giveaway Night and a few more fun giveaways, so I think we'll be able to keep the momentum up right through the last game," said Bragan.

Tickets are currently on sale for the rest of the 2003 season by visiting the Baseball Grounds ticket office, calling the Suns at 358-2846 or going online to www.jaxsuns.com.
